The University of Kentucky College of Law has upped its ranking game in the Spring 2016 issue of preLaw, a National Jurist publication. With a solid score of 98.15, UK Law was named one of the most diverse law schools based on state averages, according to a new study.

Jack Manhire, director of program development at Texas A&M University School of Law created a system to determine how well students at American Bar Association-accredited law schools represent the gender, race and ethnicity of both the United States as a whole, as well as in the state where each law school is located.

“Diversity matters in the legal profession. Historically people from diverse backgrounds have been underrepresented in the legal profession and within the law school population,” said Jimmi Nicholson, Director of Admissions at UK College of Law.

Out of 200 schools, UK Law ranked 20th on Manhire’s chart of how well a school represents the diversity of the state in which it is located.

“This ranking reflects the hard work and dedication we’ve put forth in attracting a distinctive group of students to UK Law,” said David A. Brennen, Dean at UK College of Law. “We still have much to do and we will continue to work to increase diversity in the law school.”

“The Office of Admissions is committed to enrolling students who represent varying backgrounds, ethnicities, beliefs and experiences,” said Nicholson. “We recognize that diversity and inclusion in the classroom plays a strong role in developing and equipping law students to function well in a global economy and an ever more increasingly diverse work space.”
