Faculty and staff of the University of Kentucky College of Law recently conducted a book drive to provide law books to the Carter G. Woodson Academy.  The drive proved to be a success as the law school delivered an overflowing tote full of books to the Academy.

“Faculty and staff come together each year to find a need in the community where we can make a difference.  Knowing the Academy is considering a pre-law program, we thought this was a great opportunity to provide them with books to help launch a program that would serve as a pipeline initiative for the law profession,” said David A. Brennen, dean of UK Law.

Alvin Farris, a teacher at the Academy, was grateful for the donation. “The Carter G. Woodson Academy was excited to receive the generous donation of law books from the University of Kentucky College of Law,” Farris said. “The donation is an excellent example of the possibilities and opportunities that stem from university and secondary education partnering together.  Moreover, the law books are literally the seminal beginnings of our law curriculum here at the Carter G. Woodson Academy.”

Farris sees the opportunity for the relationship between the Academy and UK Law to continue to grow as the pre-law program develops.  “I look forward to future collaborative opportunities with the law school such as professors visiting the academy for question and answer sessions, as well as instruction, mentoring opportunities, access to the law library, and career counseling.”

The Fayette County Public School website describes Carter G. Woodson Academy as a school that “provides an advanced and rigorous curriculum that meets the new common core standards through the lens of African-American history, culture and culturally responsive teaching and learning strategies.” The school serves males in grades 6-11, preparing them to be college- and career-ready upon graduation.
