On your mark, get set, go! On Saturday, November 20, the UK Law Wellness Initiative, a student organization at the University of Kentucky College of Law, held the Race Judicata 5K at Wellington Park to promote a healthier law school community among students, faculty and staff.

The Race Judicata 5K is the first of its kind for the organization, borrowing from a similar theme used previously by the UK Law Legal Clinic. More than 40 participants laced up their running shoes and crossed a 5K finish line, while additional spectators cheered them on along the route.

“Healthy lives allow us to be our best at everything we do!” exclaimed Bret Knickerbocker, President of the UK Law Wellness Initiative.

With a willingness to keep moving, runners competed for top-finisher prizes across various categories. Winners included:

  • Bret Knickerbocker, Fastest Male
  • Katie Worcester, Fastest Female
  • Megan Mullins, Fastest 1L
  • Shawna Bramblett, Fastest 2L
  • Philip Padron, Fastest 3L
  • Sam Hoops, Fastest Dog (with their human)
  • Michael Johnson, Fastest Faculty/Staff

“The UK Law Wellness Initiative is pleased with the success of this inaugural event and appreciative to the volunteers and runners who participated,” said second-year law student Knickerbocker. “Race Judicata was such a hit, that we’re considering hosting another 5K in the spring.”

What’s up next for the UK Law Wellness Initiative? In February, the organization will host the Dean’s Challenge Program, led by Jane Grisé, Director of Academic Success and a Legal Writing Instructor at UK Law. The program consists of a 5 week challenge to introduce students to exercise, nutrition, health education, and yoga, meditation, and other programs. Profits from the Race Judicata 5K will be used to purchase Dean’s Challenge shirts for every participating UK Law student.
