University of Kentucky College of Law Director of the Office of Continuing Legal Education, Kevin P. Bucknam, was honored for 25 years of service, on July 26, 2019, during the UK Law CLE 46 Annual Midwest-Midsouth Estate Planning Institute.

Present and former members of the Estate Planning Institute Planning Committee gathered to recognize Bucknam during a special plaque presentation honoring his achievements over a quarter-century.  In addition to the successes of the Estate Planning Institute, Bucknam co-founded the American College of Equine Attorneys and served on the organization’s first Board of Directors, served on the teaching faculty for the University of Kentucky College of Law Legal Writing Program for ten years, and he has served as an Adjunct Professor of Law with Sullivan University since 1995.  He is also the General Editor for the LexisNexis/Matthew Bender, 4 volume set, Caldwell’s Kentucky Form Book.

Danny Murphy, Senior Assistant Dean of Community Engagement & Operations UK Law, presented the plaque to Bucknam on behalf of the Planning Committee and the College of Law.  “Kevin is like the Wizard of Oz.  He makes amazing things happen behind the scenes and does not want any recognition or credit,” said Dean Murphy.  “The CLE programming organized by Kevin and his outstanding staff impacts the legal profession across the Commonwealth, nation, and even the world.  It is an honor to be part of celebrating Kevin and his service to our profession.”

Bucknam joined UK Law in 1994 as Assistant Director and Director of Publications of CLE and has served as Director since 2001, overseeing the management of CLE.  Prior to joining UK Law CLE, he practiced law where he primarily focused on commercial litigation, corporate transactional work, and employment law.

“So much of the work of a Continuing Legal Education program is done behind the scenes out of sight.  Kevin is a master at seeking out leaders and speakers, and steadily gathering committees in the different disciplines and working ideas into final CLE programs which compel attendance by those lawyers in those fields,” said Glen Bagby, CLE Estate Planning Institute Co-chair.  “UK is lucky to have him!”

Bucknam is a summa cum laude graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and was awarded his J.D. (cum laude) from California Western School of Law in San Diego, California.  He is licensed to practice law in both California and South Carolina.
