This spring, the University of Kentucky College of Law will continue one of its signature pro bono efforts – the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. The UK Tax Clinic will be open Monday, February 20 through Tuesday, April 18. Taxpayers can schedule an appointment at http://law.uky.edu/tax.

The University of Kentucky College of Law Women’s Law Caucus (WLC) recently teamed up with three UK Law Professors to host “Cocktails Against Cancer,” a fundraising event to benefit the Markey Cancer Center.
In its second year since its inception, the event raised over $900 from ticket sales and donations.

Ready, set, step up! Faculty and staff at the University of Kentucky College of Law put fitness first this summer during the LiveWell college/division Step Up challenge – a friendly competition to reach the highest group step average at the University of Kentucky.
And UK Law didn’t tread lightly, earning third place out of 30 teams across campus. The team, made up of 16 participants with a motivation to move, averaged 11,261 steps per day during the 42 day span.

This spring, the University of Kentucky College of Law continued one of its signature pro bono efforts – the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. UK College of Law student volunteers provided free assistance with tax preparations and filings to mostly low income individuals with simple returns. Now that tax season is over, the 2016 numbers are in!
Professor Jennifer Bird-Pollan was promoted to Associate Professor and granted tenure. She joined the College of Law faculty in 2010, teaching Federal Income Tax, Estate & Gift tax, International Tax, Partnership Tax, Corporate Tax, and a Seminar in Tax Policy. She received her J.D. from Harvard Law School, where she was the articles editor for the Harvard Journal of Law and Gender, and her B.A. in Philosophy and French from Penn State University. Bird-Pollan also earned an M.A. in Philosophy from Vanderbilt University, where she is completing her Ph.D.
This spring, the University of Kentucky College of Law continued one of its signature pro bono efforts – the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Now, tax season is over and the 2014 numbers are in!
This year, a total of 46 volunteers, including 25 law students and two law alumni, prepared and filed 587 tax returns for mostly low income individuals with simple returns. Clients saved an estimated $114,465 in preparation fees and received $579,000 in federal refunds and $110,000 in state refunds.
Congratulations are in order for a University of Kentucky husband and wife team – Philosophy Professor Stefan Bird-Pollan and College of Law Professor Jennifer Bird-Pollan. They are first-time recipients of Fulbright Visiting Professorships, given by the Fulbright Scholar Program.
A Fulbright award sends U.S. scholars to foreign countries for academic exchange. Currently 155 countries participate in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Ultimately this program will help lead to a more peaceful, prosperous world.
Now that tax season is over, preliminary numbers are coming in from the 2013 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.
