Ready, set, step up! Faculty and staff at the University of Kentucky College of Law put fitness first this summer during the LiveWell college/division Step Up challenge – a friendly competition to reach the highest group step average at the University of Kentucky.

And UK Law didn’t tread lightly, earning third place out of 30 teams across campus. The team, made up of 16 participants with a motivation to move, averaged 11,261 steps per day during the 42 day span.

Eighteen diverse high school students, representing all of Lexington’s public high schools and Sayre, came to the University of Kentucky College of Law on June 12-18 for the third annual Summer Law Institute (SLI) – a seven-day residential Law Camp for rising juniors and seniors interested in law and the legal profession.

Kenleigh Joseph, a student at Tates Creek High School, participated in the camp this year.

While the faculty at the University of Kentucky College of Law spend most of their time preparing students to be lawyers and leaders and producing widely-recognized legal scholarship, they also make time to engage with scholars from other schools across the nation by hosting two visiting speaker series: the Randall-Park Distinguished Speaker and Faculty Brownbag Speaker.

This spring, the University of Kentucky College of Law continued one of its signature pro bono efforts – the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. UK College of Law student volunteers provided free assistance with tax preparations and filings to mostly low income individuals with simple returns. Now that tax season is over, the 2016 numbers are in!

The University of Kentucky College of Law hosted its sixth annual golf tournament on May 16 at the world class Keene Trace Golf Club. UK Law alumni, faculty, students and friends swung by the Champion Trace Course for a day of friendly competition and a “hole” lot of fun.

University of Kentucky College of Law Assistant Professor Albertina Antognini has been selected to participate in the 17th Annual Yale/Stanford/Harvard Junior Faculty Forum, to be held at Yale Law School on June 28-29, 2016. She will present her paper titled, “Defining Nonmarriage.”

Prof. Antognini’s paper analyzes how the law treats couples who engage in sexual, affective, and economic relationships outside of marriage by looking at how courts distribute property when the individuals separate.
