The University of Kentucky College of Law hosted its sixth annual golf tournament on May 16 at the world class Keene Trace Golf Club. UK Law alumni, faculty, students and friends swung by the Champion Trace Course for a day of friendly competition and a “hole” lot of fun.

This year’s tournament, a four-person team best ball scramble, resulted in $10,000 in profit to benefit students at the law school. Since its inception in 2011, the golf tournament has netted over $67,000 to support student scholarships and place students in public interest opportunities. Last summer, current third-year law student Nealy Williams received a placement at Maxwell Street Legal Clinic.

“The experience enhanced my classroom learning by helping me to ‘put a face’ to the legal concepts I’d learned,” said Williams. “It was a great opportunity to use my skills to actually help someone instead of only thinking about the concepts abstractly or in the confines of a hypothetical.”

The day culminated with an awards dinner, where first, second and third place teams were awarded trophies. The Prestonsburg, Kentucky team of Larry Brown (UK Law ’81), Chase Brown (UK Law ’15), Gary Brown, and Ben Cooksey finished 17-under par to take first place for the fourth year since the tournament’s start. The team of JR Leach, Nathan Williams (UK Law ’07), Parker Alboher, and Chris Kubijak came in second and the team of Eric Straub, Jason Straub, Ellis Allen, and Brandon Magner finished third. “Longest Drive” winner, Nate Williams (Hole #8), and “Closest to Pin” winner, Mike Runyon (Hole #16), were awarded a package of top of the line Titleist golf balls.

“The UK College of Law’s annual golf tournament is a chance for my son Chase and I to visit our former instructors, visit with friends and play golf – what better way to spend an afternoon,” said UK Law alumus Larry Brown. “All four of us have played scramble tournaments for years and just love competition. My cousin, Ben Cooksey, is a University of Louisville graduate. It’s fun to make him wear UK blue if he wants to continue playing with us.”

The 16 teams of golfers were able to par-take in a silent auction for prizes including Cincinnati Reds Diamond Seat tickets, an overnight stay and dinner at CastlePost in Versailles, a Keeneland framed print, a bottle of Wild Turkey Russell’s Reserve signed by co-Master Distillers Jimmy Russell and Eddie Russell, and more.

Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects was the hole-in-one sponsor, giving players the chance to win the ultimate hole-in-one prize: $10,000. Other event sponsors included:
