Brian L. Frye, Spears-Gilbert Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law, is one of the most downloaded authors on SSRN, a platform dedicated to the rapid dissemination of preprints and research papers. As of March 1, 2025, Frye held the 26th spot among 3,000 law authors for total new downloads over the past 12 months.

Josh Douglas, acting associate dean for research at the UK Rosenberg College of Law, praised Frye’s achievement. "Many scholars find significant research on SSRN,” Douglas said. “The fact that Professor Frye is one of the top downloaded scholars is a testament to his productivity and impact."

Frye, who joined the UK Rosenberg College of Law faculty in 2012, teaches a wide array of subjects, including intellectual property, copyright, trademark, nonprofit organizations, art law, civil procedure, professional responsibility, contracts, property, constitutional law, and media law. He has also offered seminars on intellectual property theory; property theory; and law and popular culture.

Frye's research focuses on intellectual property and organizations, especially in relation to artists, the art market, and arts organizations. He is best-known for his work on plagiarism, blockchain, and legal history, as well as his practice of creating conceptual art in the medium of legal scholarship.

“I have used SSRN since I published my first law review article in 2007, and currently share more than 100 articles, which have been downloaded more than 80,000 times, making me the 418th most downloaded author,” Frye said. “SSRN also ranks authors by discipline. In the last 12 months, my articles have been downloaded 12,148 times, making me the 26th most downloaded legal scholar. That is important, because it means that a lot of people are reading my legal scholarship, which implies that my work has real-world impact.”
