Mark E Hoch
Visiting Assistant Professor of Legal Research and Writing
Mark Hoch joined the faculty at the UK J. David Rosenberg College of Law in August 2026 as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Legal Research and Writing, teaching multiple sections of 1L Legal Writing. He is very excited to be returning to the Commonwealth as he began his academic career teaching Legal Research at the Chase College of Law at NKU. He has also taught 1L and upper-level Legal Writing courses at several law schools, including the LSU Law Center and Mercer University School of Law, as well as upper-level doctrinal courses in Public International Law. An expert in facilitating legal skills development, he has also been an Assistant Dean, Director, and Professor in Academic Success Programs at several law schools, including playing an integral role in the Final ABA Accreditation Approval process of two new law schools. He has also taught international short courses in Basic U.S. Law, Comparative Law, and Legal English in Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Peru.
A lifelong learner, his interdisciplinary research integrates Legal Education, Learning Science and Strategies, Cognitive Neuroscience, Second Language Acquisition Theory and other areas to determine how best to effectuate and facilitate Understanding, Analysis and Communication learning in law students at every year and level. A technology innovator, he pioneered the use of Digital Video Annotation Software to enhance 1L feedback and is currently reconstituting a previously taught live “Legal Analysis” course reinforcing legal learning for “at-risk” and probationary law students into a bichronous online course.
Before entering legal academia, Professor Hoch was a private investigator, court-appointed criminal investigator, mediator, and two-time federal judicial law clerk to the Honorable Nathaniel R. Jones on the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. He obtained a B.A. in Environmental Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder (Go Buffs!), a J.D. from the University of Cincinnati as a Human Rights Fellow, an LL.M. from the University of Virginia as a Ford Foundation Fellow in Public International Law, and received Certificates in both Public and Private International Law from the Hague Academy of International Law.
An avid cook, baker, hiker, and music-maker, he is looking forward to taking advantage of all the wonderful things to do, see, hear and eat in the Bluegrass State!
