UK Law Library Launches Lexis Digital LIbrary

The UK Law Library is pleased to be one of the first university law libraries in the country to offer our faculty and students access to the Lexis Digital Library. This resource provides e-book versions of over 800 Lexis titles including popular study aid series such as "Understanding" and "Questions and Answers," Kentucky practice materials like Caldwell's Kentucky Form Book and Kentucky Evidence Law Handbook, and authoritative treatises such as Nimmer on Copyright and Collier on Bankruptcy.

Trey Grayson Speaks to Election Law Class

Trey Grayson (Law ’97), the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce CEO, spoke to Professor Josh Douglas' election law class on Monday, November 17 about his service on the Presidential Commission on Election Administration (the Bauer-Ginsburg Commission). Before becoming President of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Grayson was director of the Harvard University Institute of Politics. Prior to that, he served two terms as Kentucky Secretary of State. Grayson holds an MBA and JD from the University of Kentucky.

International Law Society Collects for Care Kits Part II

On Tuesday, December 10, 2013, twenty-seven refugee care kits were delivered to Kentucky Refugee Ministries (KRM). KRM is a local non-profit organization that resettles refugees in the Lexington area. Refugees represent one of Lexington’s most vulnerable populations. Often, they arrive in Lexington with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. To meet some of the urgent needs of the refugee community, twelve UK College of Law organizations and the Career Development Office held the Refugee Care Kit Donation Drive during the 2013 holiday season.

New Year, New You: The Road to a Healthy Lifestyle at the College of Law

To start the new year off right, the UK College of Law introduced Raise the Bar, a wellness program for students, faculty and staff. Jane Bloom Grise, Director of Academic Success and Professor of Legal Writing, came up with the idea for a wellness program after attending, A Conversation about Mental Health and Wellness in Law School and the Legal Profession, hosted by KYLAP and the Dave Nee Foundation in November.

Dear UK Law, Top of the morning from London! I am fortunate enough to be one of five UK Law students studying abroad with the London Law Consortium this semester. We are studying international and comparative law with about 20 other American law students from a handful of law schools across the United States.

Women’s Law Caucus Members Attend Ms. JD Conference

Women’s Law Caucus members Ashley Adkins, Shannon Leahy, Ally Miller and Megan Pigman attended Ms. JD: Passion Forward, the Sixth Annual Conference on Women in Law, held at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, February 21-22, 2014. It was the first year members of The Women’s Law Caucus attended the conference and the 3L students were ecstatic about the opportunity. They hope that this will be the start of a yearly tradition for the student organization. “The timing in our 3L year was great!” exclaimed Megan Pigman, President of Women’s Law Caucus.

Oral Advocacy Tournament Champion Revealed

On Thursday, April 17, the UK College of Law’s Legal Research and Writing Program hosted the Championship Round of the First Year Oral Advocacy Tournament. Students, faculty and staff filled the Courtroom as the two final student advocates, Meredith Berge, Counsel for the Appellant, and Kirby Stephens, Counsel for the Appellee, appeared before an esteemed panel of “justices” that included: Justice Daniel Venters of the Kentucky Supreme Court, Susan Clary, Clerk of the Kentucky Supreme Court, and UK Law Professor Cortney Lollar.

Students Spend Spring Break Engaged in Pro Bono Work

University of Kentucky College of Law students Joseph Brown, Alexis Gonzalez-Lopez, Arash Hamidi, Nick Modarressi, Terra Rivera and Steven Stewart spent their spring break in Eastern Kentucky from March 17-21 engaging in pro bono work. This is the third year in a row that UK College of Law students participated in this alternative spring break opportunity. Law students from Duke, Virginia and Notre Dame also participate in the pro bono effort during their respective spring breaks.

125 Graduates Receive Juris Doctor Degrees

On Friday, May 9, 2014, the University of Kentucky College of Law held its Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2014. Family and friends gathered in the Singletary Center for the Arts to honor and celebrate the graduating students. Jeffrey S. Moad, as the highest-ranked student of the class, gave the greetings for the graduates. “I am humbled to have this opportunity to speak today,” said Moad. “It has been an absolute honor to spend these past three years with some of the smartest, kindest, and most interesting people I have ever met.”

The College of Law hosted its fourth annual UK College of Law Golf Tournament presented by LexisNexis® on Monday, May 19, at Champion Trace Golf Club. Picture perfect weather and 16 teams of UK Law alumni, faculty, students (a record number with 12 playing) and friends made for a great day of friendly competition.
