Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program: By the Numbers

This spring, the University of Kentucky College of Law continued one of its signature pro bono efforts – the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Now, tax season is over and the 2014 numbers are in! This year, a total of 46 volunteers, including 25 law students and two law alumni, prepared and filed 587 tax returns for mostly low income individuals with simple returns. Clients saved an estimated $114,465 in preparation fees and received $579,000 in federal refunds and $110,000 in state refunds.

Student Wins National Writing Competition

Katherine Beyer, a third year law student at the University of Kentucky College of Law from Richmond, VA, won first place in the 2014 IDEA Student IP Writing Competition. Her article, “Hyper-Linking Content as Copyright Infringement: Not Worth All the Hype,” will be published in IDEA: The Intellectual Property Law Review this fall.

Turkish Judges Visit Campus

The University of Kentucky College of Law and the Patterson School of Diplomacy were pleased to welcome to campus, in partnership with U.S. District Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove (UK Law ’89), five judges from Turkey on September 23, 2014. The judges (Ayise Kalem, Murat Oner, Seckin Kocer, Volkan Muftuoglu, and Zekiye Ozturk) served on a panel with Judge Van Tatenhove, Professor Cortney Lollar, and Professor Marianna Jackson Clay as moderator. They discussed the similarities and differences between the judicial and legal education systems of Turkey and the United States.

Students Compete in Moot Court Competition

The University of Kentucky College of Law Moot Court team competed with 14 other schools during the Earle E. Zehmer Moot Court Competition held in Orlando, Florida August 19-21. UK's team was comprised of third year law students, Laken Gilbert of Fleming County, Ky., and Courtney Rosser of Maysville, Ky. While the team was able to argue twice, they were eliminated before moving into a top eight spot. Professor Paul Salamanca served as the faculty sponsor for this competition.

Election Analysis Blog Launched

The University of Kentucky College of Law Election Law Society, a law student organization, and election law professor, Joshua A. Douglas, announce the first of its kind at UK – an Election Analysis Blog.
