The Women’s Law Caucus Hosts Annual Spring Luncheon
The UK College of Law Women’s Law Caucus hosted their Annual Spring Luncheon on Thursday, March 6, at the Hilary J. Boone Center to honor Anita M. Britton and Jennifer Bird-Pollan for their outstanding dedication to women in the law.
Anita M. Britton, a 1982 graduate of the College of Law, opened Britton Osborne Johnson, PLLC, a female-only law firm, with Crystal Osborne and Amy Johnson. Before opening the firm, Anita established herself as one of the premiere attorneys in the Commonwealth, especially in family law. Anita is also known for giving so much of her time back to community service efforts.
Jennifer Bird-Pollan, Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky College of Law, started the Lean In student and professor reading groups this year. Lean In is one of the most influential and controversial books regarding women in the workplace, and a book Bird-Pollan says is worth discussing.
“The reading groups happened because of the commitment and interest of the students and faculty,” said Bird-Pollan. “I think it demonstrates what an engaged community we are.”
After giving their keynote addresses to the 109 people in attendance, Britton and Bird-Pollan were each presented with an engraved julep cup, a unique gift that Women’s Law Caucus President Megan Pigman says honorees are usually excited about receiving.
“I was absolutely thrilled and extremely flattered when Chelsea Granville and Megan Pigman informed me that I’d be an honoree,” said Bird-Pollan. “My students are part of what makes my job so great, and it means a lot to me to get this recognition from them.”
The Women's Law Caucus is a student organization at the University of Kentucky College of Law devoted to celebrating and fostering the contributions of women in the legal field. They lead a mentorship program with area attorneys, bring awareness to domestic and sexual violence, run a health and wellness campaign for their members, and host social and networking events in Lexington.
