Women’s Law Caucus Hosts 2016 Annual Spring Luncheon

The UK College of Law Women’s Law Caucus hosted its annual Spring Luncheon on Wednesday, March 9, at the Hilary J. Boone Center to honor Jane H. Allen and Cortney Lollar for their outstanding contributions as women in the law.
Jane H. Allen, a 1991 graduate of the College of Law, is the Founder of Counsel On Call, a role in which she leads the development of the company, works closely on the career path and lifestyle offered to Counsel On Call attorneys, and consults with senior in-house attorneys and law firm partners on how to effectively manage legal work and expenses. Since the year 2000 and under Allen’s leadership, Counsel On Call has been named to Inc. magazine list of the 500 fastest-growing, privately held companies in the U.S. three times and has grown to become the leading “new model” legal services provider.
“It’s very motivating to see a UK Law graduate, who is a woman, managing this company. It is even more inspiring to see that the company provides an opportunity to practice law and a culture that strives to maintain work-life balance,” said Mary Ellen Wimberly, President of the Women’s Law Caucus.
Cortney Lollar, Assistant Professor of Law at the UK College of Law, joined the faculty in 2013. Prior to joining UK, Professor Lollar was a clinical faculty fellow at Washington University in St. Louis, where she taught the Criminal Justice Clinic. She previously represented adult and juvenile defendants at the trial and appellate level at the Federal Defender Program in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. She has served as a legal consultant in India for the Initiative for Medicines, Access, and Knowledge, and a research assistant to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women.
“Professor Lollar is the kind of teacher that really cares about her students,” said Wimberly. “You can tell in the way she teaches and in her willingness to help students outside of class. She’s a strong woman, teacher, and mentor who is always there encouraging other women to be strong leaders.”
Allen and Lollar gave unforgettable keynote addresses to over 70 guests in attendance. The annual celebration of the contributions of women in the legal field is one of the organization’s largest, most successful events of the year.
“It’s always a lot of fun to see people coming back every year – ones that have transitioned from student to lawyer,” said Wimberly. “I left feeling very inspired and able to change the world, and I think a lot of other people did too.”
The Women's Law Caucus is a student organization at the University of Kentucky College of Law devoted to celebrating and fostering the contributions of women in the legal field. They lead a mentorship program with area attorneys, bring awareness to domestic and sexual violence, run a health and wellness campaign for their members, and host social and networking events in Lexington.
