UK Law Litigation Banquet

The University of Kentucky College of Law recently honored the hard work and dedication of the officers, members, advisors, and coaches of the Moot Court Board and Trial Advocacy Board (TAB), as well as many first-year students in connection with their Legal Research and Writing (LRW) Clubs. The Litigation Banquet recognizes the students who have excelled in both written and oral advocacy.

Federalist Society Hosts Inaugural Spring Banquet with Speaker Congressman Andy Barr

The UK College of Law chapter of the Federalist Society hosted its inaugural spring banquet at Jefferson Davis Inn on April 1. Nearly thirty members of the chapter and other law students attended to hear U.S. Representative Andy Barr (a former University of Kentucky College of Law Federalist Society chapter president) speak on his time at the University of Kentucky and how federalism principles influence his votes in Congress.

UK College of Law Hosted Regionals of National Trial Competition

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 12, 2015) – Law students from thirteen different law schools and four different states made the trip to Lexington to compete for a chance to participate in the National Trial Competition, the most prestigious trial competition in the nation. The University of Kentucky College of Law and the Kentucky Chapter of the American College of Trial Lawyers co-hosted the regional competition at the Fayette District and Circuit Courthouses Feb. 6-8.

Black Lung Law & Policy

The Kentucky Journal for Equine, Agriculture and Natural Resources Law and the Appalachian Law Society hosted Evan Smith at the UK College of Law on November 20, 2014. Smith discussed “Black Lung Law & Policy: An Introduction to Disease, Law, and Current Issues.” Smith is a graduate of Oberlin College and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He received a 2013 Skadden Fellowship to build upon Appalachian Citizens' Law Center’s representation of coal miners and their families in mine safety and black lung cases and to specialize in appellate advocacy.

2014-2015 Judicial Conversation Series

The University of Kentucky College of Law hosted Chief Judge Tracey Wise from the Eastern District of Kentucky United States Bankruptcy Court on October 22 as part of the College of Law’s 2014-2015 Judicial Conversation Series. Judge Wise met with members of the Women’s Law Caucus for breakfast and discussed challenges she faces in her judiciary role as a female in a predominantly male position. She encouraged the Women’s Law Caucus members to continue pursuing their dreams, whether it’s practicing law or becoming a judge, and assured them it is possible to balance family and career.

Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Speaks on Hemp Legislation

The UK College of Law Federalist Society hosted Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture James Comer in September. Commissioner Comer spoke to students about Kentucky's passage of regulatory framework to allow for the legalization of industrial hemp. The Commissioner also spoke on the latest developments on hemp regulation at the federal level and the implications on the agriculture community.

UK Law Hosts Mountain Caucus

The University of Kentucky College of Law’s Appalachian Law Caucus, American Constitution Society, and Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Law (KJEANRL) sponsored a Mountain Caucus Forum on Thursday, September 19. The seven-member panel included Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo, Senator Robin Webb and State Representatives Leslie Combs, Tim Couch, Tanya Pullin, John Short, and Jimmy Stewart.
