International Law Society Collects for Care Kits

On November 12, 2013, the University of Kentucky College of Law hosted “Journey to America: Immigration Law and Refugees in Lexington.” The speakers included Ms. Guione Johnstone, immigration lawyer and Program Director of Maxwell Street Legal Clinic, Ms. Dabney Parker, Volunteer Coordinator at Kentucky Refugee Ministries (KRM), and Mrs. Nicole Tshibangu, a Congolese refugee.

Art Law and Culture Society Hosts Speaker on Nazi Era Litigation

On Wednesday, November 6th, Professor Jennifer Kreder from Northern Kentucky University presented a talk about Nazi-era Art Litigation, an area in which she has significant experience having previously worked on such litigation. The timing of her presentation could not have been more perfect with the recent uncovering of 1,400 stolen works of art, including works by Picasso and Matisse, discovered in a Munich apartment of a now deceased wartime art dealer.

SPILF’s Annual Chili Cook-Off a Spicy Success

On Tuesday, February 18, SPILF hosted one of their hottest fundraising events of the year – the Annual Chili Cook-Off. Around 100 students, faculty and staff attended this year’s event to help raise a total of $538.00. Each year SPILF sponsors various fundraisers to raise money for the summer grant for UK Law students, host a speaker series of attorneys in various public interest fields at UK Law, sponsor public service projects, and organize other social events for UK Law students to promote public interest.

Intellectual Property Law Society Hosts Guest Speaker

On Friday, February 21, the Intellectual Property Law Society hosted guest speaker Lisa Mueller, who spoke about Patent Trolls, with roughly 20 College of Law students. Ms. Mueller is a partner in Michael Best’s Intellectual Property Practice Group and a member of the Life Sciences and Chemical Industry Group. During her presentation she covered the damaging effects that patent trolls have, not only on corporations, but also on small businesses that use products that infringe upon the patent owner’s invention.

The Women’s Law Caucus Hosts Annual Spring Luncheon

The UK College of Law Women’s Law Caucus hosted their Annual Spring Luncheon on Thursday, March 6, at the Hilary J. Boone Center to honor Anita M. Britton and Jennifer Bird-Pollan for their outstanding dedication to women in the law.

KLJ & KJEANRL Hold Annual Banquet

The Kentucky Law Journal (KLJ) and the Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Law (KJEANRL) held their annual banquet on Wednesday, March 26, at the Boone Center. There were roughly 140 attendees, including faculty and members of both journals.

Women’s Law Caucus Members Attend Ms. JD Conference

Women’s Law Caucus members Ashley Adkins, Shannon Leahy, Ally Miller and Megan Pigman attended Ms. JD: Passion Forward, the Sixth Annual Conference on Women in Law, held at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, February 21-22, 2014. It was the first year members of The Women’s Law Caucus attended the conference and the 3L students were ecstatic about the opportunity. They hope that this will be the start of a yearly tradition for the student organization. “The timing in our 3L year was great!” exclaimed Megan Pigman, President of Women’s Law Caucus.

Law Student Veterans Organization Hosts Pro Bono Reception

On Monday, April 14, the Law Student Veterans Organization, in conjunction with the Fayette Circuit Court and the Fayette Veterans Treatment Court, hosted a kick-off reception for students and lawyers interested in participating in the Veterans Treatment Court Pro Bono Program – a new program that places law students with attorney-mentors to provide civil legal services to combat veterans being treated by the Fayette County Veterans Treatment Court.

BLSA Hosts Spring Banquet

On Thursday, April 3, the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) held their annual Spring Banquet at the Hilary J. Boone Center to recognize notable alumni, graduating third-year students, and the work of the chapter. Keynote speaker Roszalyn Akins spoke to alumni, community leaders, students, faculty, and administrators about the BLSA Chapter theme, Reclaiming our Past and Shaping our Future. She noted the importance of community service and building relationships with past, present and prospective members of UK BLSA.

UK College of Law Golf Tournament Presented by LexisNexis®

The College of Law hosted its fourth annual UK College of Law Golf Tournament presented by LexisNexis® on Monday, May 19, at Champion Trace Golf Club. Picture perfect weather and 16 teams of UK Law alumni, faculty, students (a record number with 12 playing) and friends made for a great day of friendly competition.
