On your mark, get set, go! On Sunday, October 15, the UK Law Wellness Initiative, a student organization at the University of Kentucky College of Law, held their second annual Race Judicata 5K at Wellington Park to promote a healthier law school community among students, faculty and staff.

Approximately 50 participants laced up their running shoes and crossed the 5K finish line, while additional spectators cheered them on along the route.

“It was especially great this year. The weather was beautiful, and we had a much more user-friendly course that even included a water stop!” exclaimed Bret Knickerbocker, member of the UK Law Wellness Initiative.

With a willingness to keep moving, runners competed for top-finisher certificates across various categories. Winners included:

  • David A. Brennen, Fastest Over 50 Male
  • Drew Davenport, Fastest Racer with Dog
  • Sydney Freeman, Fastest 1L
  • Jane Grisé, Fastest Over 50 Female
  • Jake Hazelwood, 1st Place Overall
  • Kristin J. Hazelwood, Fastest Faculty Member
  • Sam Hoops, 2nd Place Overall
  • Bret Knickerbocker, Fastest 3L

“There’s something really special about one’s classmates and professors being at a park with you on a beautiful Sunday afternoon enjoying life and being healthy,” said third-year law student Knickerbocker.

Profits from the race went mostly towards purchasing shirts for race participants. A small donation was also made to the UK Law Legal Clinic.

So what’s next for this UK Law student organization? In February, the Wellness Initiative will host the Dean’s Challenge Program, led by Jane Grisé, Director of Academic Enhancement and Assistant Professor of Legal Research and Writing at UK Law. The program consists of a 5 week challenge to introduce students to exercise, nutrition, health education, and yoga, meditation, and other programs.

And, look for the Wellness Initiative to continue their annual Race Judicata 5K next fall.
