Career Development usually writes a grant to the Kentucky Bar Association’s IOLTA Fund to request funding for summer public interest grants. Career Development then administers the grant’s application, selection, and distribution process for 1Ls and 2Ls. This process normally takes place during the spring semester. The law school is grateful to KBA’s IOLTA Fund for their generous support of public interest and public service at UK Law.
The Associate Dean for Career Development is the advisor for the Student Public Interest Law Foundation (SPILF), the public interest group for students at UK Law who are interested in public interest and public service law. SPILF helps to bring public interest speakers to campus, fund raises, and assists with the public interest grants process. The money raised by SPILF is used primarily to fund public interest summer grants for law students.
In the past, UK Law students working in public interest law during the summer have applied for and been awarded Equal Justice Works summer grants. These grants are usually educational assistance grants in the amount of $1,000 or more. Normally 1-2 UK students are selected for the grants each year.
