UK College of Law Professor on KET

Professor Paul Salamanca appeared on the June 23rd edition of Kentucky Educational Television (KET) program "Kentucky Tonight" as part of a panel discussing Campaign Finance. The panel argued four main questions that make up the campaign finance debate:

2014 Duncan Teaching Award Recipient Announced

And the 2014 Duncan Teaching Award goes to…Professor Melissa Henke. Every year, a College of Law faculty member is recognized for excellence in the classroom, courtesy of the Robert M. and Joanne K. Duncan Faculty Improvement Fund – established in 1982 to promote outstanding teaching performance at the College of Law.

KBA Young Lawyers Luncheon Honors College of Law Professor

The Young Lawyers Division of the Kentucky Bar Association honored UK College of Law Professor Bob Lawson with the 2014 Outstanding Service to Young Lawyers Award during their annual luncheon at the Kentucky Bar Association Convention on June 19. Professor Allison Connelly, the inaugural recipient of this award, introduced Professor Lawson. Professors William Fortune, Chris Frost, Melissa Henke, and Kathy Moore were also in attendance to watch Professor Lawson receive this well-deserved honor.

College of Law Professors Present at 2014 Annual Bench & Bar

On June 24-25, the Fayette Circuit Court and Fayette County Bar Association presented the 2014 Annual Bench & Bar at the Fayette Circuit Court. Two College of Law professors presented during the two-day event where participants had the opportunity to earn up to 12.5 total credit hours, including two hours of ethics credits. Professor Nicole Huberfeld presented on the Affordable Care Act on June 24, and Professor Rick Underwood provided an Ethics Update on June 25.

College of Law Professors Present at UK CLE Events

From March to June, six UK College of Law faculty members took part in UK College of Law Continuing Legal Education programs by presenting in their areas of expertise.

College of Law Professor Elected to LexArts Board

“I have joined the LexArts board because it does such important work supporting and promoting the arts in Fayette County and the surrounding area,” said UK College of Law Professor Brian Frye.

Faculty Promotions

Professor Jennifer Bird-Pollan was promoted to Associate Professor and granted tenure. She joined the College of Law faculty in 2010, teaching Federal Income Tax, Estate & Gift tax, International Tax, Partnership Tax, Corporate Tax, and a Seminar in Tax Policy. She received her J.D. from Harvard Law School, where she was the articles editor for the Harvard Journal of Law and Gender, and her B.A. in Philosophy and French from Penn State University. Bird-Pollan also earned an M.A. in Philosophy from Vanderbilt University, where she is completing her Ph.D.

College of Law Ranked as a Best Value Law School

In the recent back-to-school issue of PreLaw Magazine, the University of Kentucky College of Law ranked third among the nation's top 20 Best Value Law Schools, which is a move up from seventh place last year. Best Value Law Schools recognition is based on a combination of bar passage rates, employment rates, debt load, and tuition.

College of Law Professor Wins National Award

College of Law Professor Christopher W. Frost was awarded the 2014 Editors’ Prize by the American Bankruptcy Law Journal. His article, entitled "Bankruptcy Voting, Bad Faith and Claim Designation," discusses the law surrounding creditor voting in Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases. It focuses particularly on the circumstances that lead judges to disqualify the votes of creditors based on creditor bad faith or other misuse of the voting power.

Student Wins National Writing Competition

Katherine Beyer, a third year law student at the University of Kentucky College of Law from Richmond, VA, won first place in the 2014 IDEA Student IP Writing Competition. Her article, “Hyper-Linking Content as Copyright Infringement: Not Worth All the Hype,” will be published in IDEA: The Intellectual Property Law Review this fall.
