Students Spend Spring Break Engaged in Pro Bono Work

University of Kentucky College of Law students Joseph Brown, Alexis Gonzalez-Lopez, Arash Hamidi, Nick Modarressi, Terra Rivera and Steven Stewart spent their spring break in Eastern Kentucky from March 17-21 engaging in pro bono work. This is the third year in a row that UK College of Law students participated in this alternative spring break opportunity. Law students from Duke, Virginia and Notre Dame also participate in the pro bono effort during their respective spring breaks.

Law Student Veterans Organization Hosts Pro Bono Reception

On Monday, April 14, the Law Student Veterans Organization, in conjunction with the Fayette Circuit Court and the Fayette Veterans Treatment Court, hosted a kick-off reception for students and lawyers interested in participating in the Veterans Treatment Court Pro Bono Program – a new program that places law students with attorney-mentors to provide civil legal services to combat veterans being treated by the Fayette County Veterans Treatment Court.

BLSA Hosts Spring Banquet

On Thursday, April 3, the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) held their annual Spring Banquet at the Hilary J. Boone Center to recognize notable alumni, graduating third-year students, and the work of the chapter. Keynote speaker Roszalyn Akins spoke to alumni, community leaders, students, faculty, and administrators about the BLSA Chapter theme, Reclaiming our Past and Shaping our Future. She noted the importance of community service and building relationships with past, present and prospective members of UK BLSA.

Professor to Present Film in Istanbul

Award-winning filmmaker and College of Law Professor Brian Frye will travel to Istanbul on May 8-13 to present his first feature-length documentary, Our Nixon, at the TRT Film Festival. Our Nixon is an 85-minute documentary comprised of Super 8 home movies, television news, and archival interviews shot by top Nixon aides H.R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, and Dwight Chapin between 1969 and 1972. The film provides a new perspective on how Haldeman, Ehrlichman and Chapin experienced working for President Nixon, and their role in the Watergate conspiracy.

125 Graduates Receive Juris Doctor Degrees

On Friday, May 9, 2014, the University of Kentucky College of Law held its Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2014. Family and friends gathered in the Singletary Center for the Arts to honor and celebrate the graduating students. Jeffrey S. Moad, as the highest-ranked student of the class, gave the greetings for the graduates. “I am humbled to have this opportunity to speak today,” said Moad. “It has been an absolute honor to spend these past three years with some of the smartest, kindest, and most interesting people I have ever met.”

UK College of Law Golf Tournament Presented by LexisNexis®

The College of Law hosted its fourth annual UK College of Law Golf Tournament presented by LexisNexis® on Monday, May 19, at Champion Trace Golf Club. Picture perfect weather and 16 teams of UK Law alumni, faculty, students (a record number with 12 playing) and friends made for a great day of friendly competition.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program: By the Numbers

This spring, the University of Kentucky College of Law continued one of its signature pro bono efforts – the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Now, tax season is over and the 2014 numbers are in! This year, a total of 46 volunteers, including 25 law students and two law alumni, prepared and filed 587 tax returns for mostly low income individuals with simple returns. Clients saved an estimated $114,465 in preparation fees and received $579,000 in federal refunds and $110,000 in state refunds.

UK College of Law Hosts Fourth Annual Developing Ideas Conference

On Wednesday, May 21, the University of Kentucky College of Law held its fourth annual Developing Ideas Conference. Untenured and recently tenured faculty from across the nation were able to gather and share their developing ideas for scholarship in an informal, supportive, and engaging environment – just before diving into summer research. Nicole Huberfeld, H. Wendell Cherry Professor of Law and Chair of Faculty Development at UK College of Law, spearheaded the 2014 conference.

College of Law Inducts Three Members into 2014 Hall of Fame

On June 18 in Covington, KY, the University of Kentucky College of Law and the Law Alumni Association inducted three new members into the 2014 Hall of Fame at an alumni reception held annually in conjunction with the Kentucky Bar Association Convention. The Hall of Fame was established to acknowledge graduates who have achieved extraordinary professional success, have a high degree of character and integrity, and have a profound positive impact on the College of Law. The three Hall of Fame inductees are Albert B. “Ben” Chandler III, W. David Denton, and William R. Garmer.

UK College of Law Co-Hosts First Law Camp

June 8-14, the UK College of Law, in conjunction with the Fayette County Bar Association (FCBA), co-hosted the first Summer Law Institute (SLI) – a seven-day residential Law Camp for high school students interested in law and the legal profession.
