U.S. Senate Majority Leader and University of Kentucky College of Law alumnus Mitch McConnell has been named to Time's 100 Most Influential People list and will be featured in the annual Time 100 issue available on newsstands April 27. The list, now in its 12th year, recognizes the activism, innovation and achievement of the world’s most influential individuals.

Albanian Judges Visit UK Law

On April 16, 2015, the University of Kentucky College of Law and the Patterson School of Diplomacy were pleased to welcome to campus, in partnership with Assistant U.S. Attorney David Grise (UK Law ’83) and U.S. District Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove (UK Law ’89), seven judges from the Albanian School of Magistrates. The Albanian School of Magistrates provides initial legal training and is the sole provider of Continuing Legal Education for judges and prosecutors.

Paul Salamanca, the Wyatt, Tarrant and Combs Professor of Law, was quoted in an article that ran in both USA Today and The Courier-Journal on amicus briefs influencing the gay marriage case. "Some amicus briefs are extremely valuable, others not so much," said University of Kentucky law professor Paul Salamanca, who was a law clerk for Justice David Souter. "What matters is who submits the briefs and what they say, not head counts." …

Federalist Society Hosts Inaugural Spring Banquet with Speaker Congressman Andy Barr

The UK College of Law chapter of the Federalist Society hosted its inaugural spring banquet at Jefferson Davis Inn on April 1. Nearly thirty members of the chapter and other law students attended to hear U.S. Representative Andy Barr (a former University of Kentucky College of Law Federalist Society chapter president) speak on his time at the University of Kentucky and how federalism principles influence his votes in Congress.

Students Competed in the Nelson Mandela International Negotiations Competition

Third year UK Law students Jamie Houston and Staci Miller took advantage of their Spring Break to develop and enhance skills that will better prepare them for their future legal careers. Houston and Miller traveled to Portland, OR over Spring Break to compete in the Nelson Mandela International Negotiations Competition (NMINC) in conjunction with the 47th National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) Convention. “Competing in the International Negotiations Competition was an awesome experience and Portland was absolutely beautiful,” Ms. Miller said.

A less common excursion is spending the week providing legal aid in Eastern Kentucky. But this year, two University of Kentucky College of Law students opted for the latter, providing a much needed service many may not think of when "alternative spring breaks" come to mind.

UK Law Students Study Abroad in London Over Spring Break

Current third-year students Stuart Michael and Rhett Dillon Quarles made the most of their Spring Break by earning law school credit while taking in the the sites of London, England. Both students took advantage of the study abroad program offered through the UK College of Law and earned academic credit by studying Corporate Law under Justice Randy J. Holland of the Delaware Supreme Court.

Healy Reappointed Academic Ombud

By: Sarah Geegan LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 30, 2015) Michael P. Healy, Wendell H. Ford Professor of Law, will continue his role of University of Kentucky academic ombud for 2015-2016. The Office of Academic Ombud Services at the University of Kentucky, is responsible for assisting students and instructors in resolving academic related problems and conflicts. The office ensures that fair policies, processes and procedures are equitably implemented. Healy's new term will begin July 1, 2015 and will continue through June 30, 2016.
